If you've never seen a Rolls-Royce in real life, you might be surprised at how understated it is. Other than the elaborate Art Deco sculpture of a woman (known as The Spirit of Ecstasy) that serves as its hood ornament, a Rolls-Royce is very old-money, and not a bit flashy. Perhaps you've noticed how often the British royal family rides in Rolls-Royce vehicles, so you might be surprised to learn the company is actually owned by BMW. Fortunately, its German owner's numerical names aren't shared by Rolls, which still uses such poetic titles as Phantom, Ghost and Wraith. The cheapest, the Ghost, starts at about $275,000, and prices go up -- way up -- from there. You have the opportunity to choose everything from the buttery leather to various kinds of wood veneers to special picnic baskets that fit just right in the back. In fact, you can even pay extra for a gold-plated or illuminated hood ornament -- but the Queen would not approve.
